Synesthesia is an application written in Processing that allows the viewer to perceive a painting with two senses, hearing and sight. A digital image of a painting fed into the program is translated into binary code one pixel at a time. This data is then played back to the viewer as a binary song. A second channel of sound is related to the distance the viewer is from the painting and uses a distance sensor conected to a computer through an Arduino.
